Should The New York Rangers Appoint A Mascot?

The New York Rangers are in a unique position. They enter this season without a mascot. Why is that unique? Because they are still the only team in hockey without one. Yes, even the Seattle Kraken, who are starting their second season, appointed one. Historically speaking, they are the only team in NHL history to never appoint one. However, there is a buzz surrounding them this season. They exceeded expectations and played a Game Six in the Eastern Conference Final last year. They had a busy offseason with Vincent Trocheck as one of the big names of the summer. What better way to excite the fans than to create and showcase a new fuzzy friend? It’s an interesting thought. They have plenty of options if they so choose. Here are some possibilities.

Statue of Liberty

This is an obvious pick. Maybe even too obvious. The Rangers actually have an alternate jersey that features Lady Liberty. Regardless, it is an easy and safe pick. You can’t get more New York than that. It would be hard to get it wrong. Have her wearing a Rangers jersey and walk around MSG. Right?

Animal

This would follow a common NHL mascot theme. The New York Rangers and subway rats? In my book I think that’s funny. But you have a million different NYC animals. Rats, pigeons, dogs, cats, the list goes on. Like the Statue of Liberty, you probably would have to try if you wanted to mess it up.

Subway?

This would be complicated but sorta possible. In recent years, their MSG buddies, the Knicks, have taken a liking to the “bing bong” sound that the subway makes when the door closes. The Knicks also have no mascot to speak of. However, a subway mascot could be really cool if done correctly. But that’s the thing, how in the world do you make one? I don’t have the answer, but it’s something I would consider neat.

The New York Rangers have never had a mascot. Could it change this season? I for one doubt it. But, they do have a lot of routes if they want to be the 32nd team in the NHL to have one.
