Should The Minnesota Timberwolves Trade Karl-Anthony Towns?

Is KAT’s Nine Lives Up?

Tonight was a tough night for Minnesota Timberwolves fans. The Wolves led the Memphis Grizzlies by as much as 26 in game three of their playoff matchup but ended up blowing a lead of 20+ twice and lost the game 104-95. But a bigger disappointment than the loss was Minnesota’s star player Karl-Anthony Towns. KAT scored a total of 8 points and attempted only four shots. Taking his entire career, along with these playoffs, into consideration, the question might need to be asked. Should the Wolves move on from KAT?

KAT Got Your Tongue?

Remember when Jimmy Butler was calling Karl-Anthony Towns and the other Wolves players soft? The rest of the lineup might have changed, but KAT remains and so does the criticism of him being soft. There is no reason why a star like Towns should be bullied into attempting only four shots. He even hit three of those shots!

Why is the leader of a team only taking four shots the entire game? Stars find ways to impact the game in favor of their squad. Yes, KAT had five blocks, but he also was in foul trouble all night. Towns is letting smaller players like Kyle Anderson, Brandon Clarke, and Xavier Tillman dictate what he does. Towns shouldn’t let that happen. He could be one of the best bigs to ever play the game if he wanted to. But the constant foul trouble and lack of effort most nights really holds him back.

KAT Out Of The Bag (sorry last cat pun)

With all this said, the question stands. Do the Wolves try to trade Towns? It’s a tough question with an even tougher answer. If anything, proposing said question just leads to more questions. Who exactly would the Wolves target in such a trade? They have a great foundation with Anthony Edwards moving forward and you don’t want to repeat history by wasting most of his early prime rebuilding.

Minnesota could get a good haul for KAT if they wanted to move on. The Hornets could take a chance this offseason if they don’t want to pay Miles Bridges and move him along with maybe James Bouknight and picks. The Warriors will obviously get thrown around with the usual Moody/Kuminga/Wiseman package. Lakers? Just kidding.

I honestly don’t know if the Wolves can win anything with Karl-Anthony Towns. He has the skill set to be something really special in this league. But he always gets in his own way and mentally doesn’t seem tough enough to be the number one option on a championship-winning team. Memphis currently leads the series 2-1. If Minnesota does lose the series and Towns continues to play poorly, this conversation will happen over and over again from Wolves fans. Honestly, I wouldn’t blame them.
