Should Jason Robertson Request A Trade Away From Dallas?

The Dallas Stars botched this and they know it. The time to take a bridge deal has come and gone. Stars owner made a very grave mistake and if I’m Jason Robertson today, I’m making my feelings very well known. Trade me now or this thing gets ugly quick.

Robertson, 23, just finished up his rookie entry level contract with Dallas. Robertson is coming off a season where he pocketed 79 points and 41 goals. I’m sorry but that’s just a guy you make sure you get taken care of. I am all for hometown deals but don’t make it to the point where it becomes disrespectful either. That’s what the Stars owner did when he scoffed at the idea of Robertson making $7 million AAV.

I’m sorry but that’s your best player. Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn are both washed and destroying any chance the Stars have to hoist a Stanley Cup. The young core the Stars have with Robertson, Miro Heiskanen, and Jake Oettinger is the most important thing Dallas has going for them. The Stars got Oettinger signed but it’s hard to see a pathway for how Robertson is signed to a long term deal.

I’m sorry but if you’re Robertson, how do you even contemplate signing a deal for less than what Tage Thompson just got? Even if Robertson signs a similar deal to Thompson (which should be off the table considering Thompson doesn’t sniff Robertson) the Stars have no ability to get that deal done.

Let’s not stop there. Did you see the deal that Timmy Stützle got? Stützle is all potential and little production. The longer the Stars wait, the more the price tag goes up. How can Robertson even CONSIDER taking less than Stützle?

According to Spotrac, Dallas only has about $6.3 million in cap space. That’s not getting it done. It’s just not. Dallas also doesn’t have a lot of options either. Why did you go sign Mason Marchment and not leave enough money on the table for your superstar? That sounds like a YOU problem.

The season starts October 11th. The clock is ticking. The bottom line is the Stars need to make a trade to open up space or just rip the bandaid off and trade Robertson. If I’m Robertson, now is the time to start applying pressure. The last thing you want to deal with is losing game checks because the Stars made a clerical error.

Tick, tick, tick. No more nice guy. Ask for a trade, Jason Robertson. If the Stars don’t think you’re worth it, let them find out what life is like without you. It won’t be pretty.
