Should The Devils Consider Trading For Adin Hill?

Should the Devils consider trading for Adin Hill? Why a trade with Vegas makes too much sense to not happen? (Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports)

Should The Devils Consider Trading For Adin Hill?

The Devils need a goalie. The Golden Knights need cap space. Does anybody else smell a trade in the air? With Adin Hill being a possible salary cap casualty this offseason and the Devils needing a goalie in the worst way, maybe there is a deal to be made here.

It’s no secret that the Devils are on the hunt for a goalie. Tom Fitzgerald has already made it clear that the Devils are willing to part with the 10th pick in the draft in order to land a veteran goalie. Jacob Markstrom, Linus Ullmark, and Juuse Saros appear to be firmly on their radar.

I’m just not sure it’s that simple:

Do you really want to give up a pick that high for Markstrom heading into age 35?

It’s hard to push all your chips in for Ullmark. He has a 15-team no-move clause and could very well be on his way to Carolina as part of the Martin Necas deal.

With Saros, the Predators just made the playoffs and they’re going to want an enormous package in order to part with him.

Maybe thinking outside of the box and working a deal with Vegas for Hill makes the most sense.

For Vegas, this would be a chance to sell high on Hill. Don’t forget, the Knights got Hill from San Jose for a measly 4th round pick. Would selling him to Jersey for a much higher sum be the worst piece of business? Especially considering cap space needs to be opened up in order to retain Jonathan Marchessault and Chandler Stephenson. Hill is also on an expiring contract, will need a raise, and hasn’t proven he can stay healthy over a full season.

Keep in mind, this is also a rare draft where Vegas might actually want draft picks. The Draft is being held in Vegas this year and despite all the trading they did at the deadline, they actually kept their own first rounder this year. Vegas also has no second, third, fourth, or fifth round pick this year. Adding pick 10 from Jersey as part of a deal for Hill would certainly offset that. It’s pretty obvious that Vegas wants to make a pick in the Sphere.

To me, this makes too much sense to not happen. Both Tom Fitzgerald and Kelly McCrimmon should be exploring deals in order to make this happen. There is a middle ground to be had where the Devils don’t have to pay an astronomical price for a top end goalie while “settling” for a Stanley Cup winning goal tender.

Who says no?
