After the Desmond Bane trade, anything could be on the table in Memphis. Are we sure Jaren Jackson Jr. isn’t available? Are we positive? If we’ve learned anything from the last calendar year, everyone is tradeable. Brad Stevens needs to pick up the phone and at least explore what a potential package for the Celtics would look like here.
Jackson, 25, is apparently a priority to extend. I believe them. I also think there’s zero reason for Jackson to extend with the team. He didn’t make any All-NBA lists, and locking himself into a below market deal to what he could earn with one simple DPOY nomination would change his life already. The former Michigan State product already lost out on a ton of money because of nonsense. Instead of crying about it, he should evaluate that he now has leverage.
The former 4th overall pick in 2018 will earn $23,413,395 in the final year of his contract in 2025-26. Technically speaking… the Celtics could save money and still add Jackson via trade depending on what avenue you want to go.
Does that include Kristaps Porzingis or Jrue Holiday? If the Celtics are going to go with this teardown method, making the team better while simultaneously saving money has to be the plan. Having Jackson be a long term building block alongside Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Derrick White makes so much damn sense.
Maybe it’s a long shot; but now is the time to be working those back channels. Make Jaren go poppypants mode. Make him declare that he will cheese his way to the Celtics in free agency. Pick up the phone and start dialing.
