Shohei Ohtani wins 2024 NL MVP

Los Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani has won the 2024 NL MVP, MLB announced Thursday. It marks his third MVP over the last four seasons–his first in the National League.

Ohtani won the award over New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor and Diamondbacks infielder Ketel Marte. Lindor earned 23 second-place votes and seven third-place votes, while Marte had five second-place votes, 13 third-place votes and nine fourth-place votes.

This marks the third time that Ohtani’s taken home the MVP unanimously, and no player in any of the four major American sports has more.

Even though he couldn’t pitch this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last winter, Ohtani continued to be one of the best hitters in baseball. He led the sport in on-base percentage, slugging, OPS, OPS+, home runs and RBIs–also scoring an MLB-most 134 runs with 59 stolen bases. He’s the first player ever to have a 50-50 season and is now the first DH to ever take home the award … and rightfully so.

He was the primary engine for baseball’s best offense, along with Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts. He was up-and-down during the Dodgers’ World Series run, but was very crucial against the Mets in the NLCS, posting a .364/548/.636 slash line with two home runs, six RBIs and nine walks across 31 plate appearances.

Ohtani was transcendent in his first season with Los Angeles after inking a $700 million deal last winter. He becomes the second player to ever win the MVP in both leagues, joining Frank Robinson, who recorded that feat in the 1960s.
