Game developer and creative lead Shinji Mikami, known for titles such as The Evil Within, Ghostwire:Tokyo, and now Hi-Fi RUSH, is to leave both Bethesda and Tango Gameworks — the latter having been founded by Mikami. The news was announced by Bethesda over Twitter.
Mikami spend decades working for Capcom before going on to found Tango Gameworks, having spent time helping make all sorts of games for the company, from Resident Evil to Devil May Cry to even Phoenix Wright. Mikami’s time within the video game industry is both well documented and lauded.
However, in 2010 Mikami decided to leave Capcom and establish his own company. But Tango Gameworks was almost immediately acquired by Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media. From there, he would work with Bethesda on his later titles.
It’s unknown what is next for the longtime game developer. According to Kotaku, Mikami stated back in 2020 that he would be developing only one more title.
Perhaps this departure from both Bethesda and Tango Gameworks is him saying that he’s officially retiring. Only time will tell. But it is apparent now that both Bethesda and Tango Gameworks have lost a seasoned veteran. The gap he is leaving behind will be tough to fill.
Whatever happens though, it’s obvious that Mikami and his legacy have been secured.
