Shane Bieber Explains Why He Turned The Red Sox Down In Free Agency

It was reported that the Red Sox made an aggressive push to sign Shane Bieber this Winter before the veteran right-handed starter re-upped with the Guardians on a one-year contract with possible option years included.

Now that the dust has settled, Bieber explained why he went back to Cleveland and turned Boston down.

“I told (the Guardians) I felt like there was unfinished business,” Bieber told MLB Network Radio on Tuesday. “So I hoped that we could work something out, and eventually we did, and I’m very happy to be going back there for a multitude of reasons, honestly.”

“I was hungry to get back out there (in Cleveland), and I still am,” Bieber said, per MLB Network Radio. “That’s driving me this offseason and through my rehab. On top of that, my wife and I are expecting a baby and we have a home in Arizona and just the familiarity with the rehab team and the doctors and the coaching staff — everything kind of came into play and we’re very happy to be returning.”

Bieber, 29, barely pitched in 2024 and threw 12 total innings. It’s a big reason why his price was way down compared to what he could have gotten when he won the Cy Young a few years ago.

All indications are that Boston actually made the highest bid here. It obviously wasn’t high enough to tempt him to leave the Guardians. The Sox have since pivoted trading for Garrett Crochet and signing Patrick Sandoval.
