Sometimes it’s okay to complain in order to get what you want, and Seth Jones just proved it. Jones is a Stanley Cup champion, and there’s no question he complained his way to the talk.
Let’s really go through it here:
Jones, 30, wins a Stanley Cup, but it comes on the heels of some interesting events.
He declares he won’t re-sign with the Blue Jackets. Then opts to take every single last penny with a tanking Blackhawks team that has virtually no chance to win. Jones goes on to play like trash with the Blackhawks, posting a -108 rating in the 3.5 years he plays for Chicago. Despite having multiple years on his contract, Jones opts for an NBA-style ask-out.
Jones gets his way, and even better, he virtually picks his landing spot because of the no-move clause in the contract. Bill Zito, who was in the front office with Columbus, once upon a time, steps in and gets a trade done. Of course, the trade isn’t even possible without Matthew Tkachuk going on LTIR, but I’ll get to that follow up story in a bit.
And give Jones credit. He held up his end of the bargain after the trade. He led the Panthers in ice time during the postseason and was a +11 while playing like a damn horse. The same Jones who we saw in Chicago vanished. The one playing for Florida is a tank with serious offensive skill.
Take a lesson from Seth Jones. Sometimes, it’s okay to complain your way to the top. Never settle.
