Sean O’Malley is getting a chance to challenge Aljamain Sterling for the UFC bantamweight title at UFC 292. Dana White made the bout official in a live announcement.
UFC 292 will take place on August 19, 2023, in Boston, Massachusetts.
UFC 292 will present Sterling with an incredibly quick turnaround. The bantamweight champion fought at UFC 288 on May 6, giving Sterling a little over three months in between championship fights.
At UFC 288, Sterling put on the best performance in his career, defeating former UFC double champion Henry Cejudo. That bout marked Sterling’s third bantamweight title defense and ninth consecutive win.
It should not come as a surprise that O’Malley will be the man to get a crack at the title. In Sterling’s UFC 288 octagon interview, he did a face-off with O’Malley which essentially confirmed he would be the next title challenger.
O’Malley earned his UFC 292 title shot last year when he earned a decision victory over Petr Yan, giving him a five-fight unbeaten streak. As one of the UFC’s most popular prospects in recent memory, a title win will give him a chance to become an MMA star. That will not be an easy task against Sterling, though.
The UFC 292 co-main event was also announced alongside the main event. In the co-main event, Weili Zhang will defend the UFC women’s strawweight title against Amanda Lemos. That bout will be Zhang’s first attempt at defending her title since winning it against Carla Esparza at UFC 281. It also solved the challenger debate between Lemos and Yan Xiaonan.
