The Los Angeles Rams drafted tight end Gerald Everett in the 2nd round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of the University of South Alabama. Despite coming in with high expectations, Everett really hasn’t made an impact at the NFL level. In fact, a tight end they took in the 4th round of the 2016 Draft (Tyler Higbee) has been more involved in the offense. Apparently, the Rams have plans to get Everett more involved in the offense.
Sean McVay making concerted effort to better utilize Gerald Everett:
“Really, really excited about what Gerald Everett’s going to do,” McVay said, via USAToday.com. “I think Tyler Higbee did a phenomenal job, but I think Gerald Everett’s a guy that I’ve got to do a better job of utilizing his skill set because he’s a difference-maker. But he’s got to get the opportunities and I think that starts with some of the things I know I can do a better job of.”
Everett’s usage in the offense was at a career high in 2019. He played 40 percent of the offensive snaps which was a career high. It resulted in a 37 catch, 408 yard season in 13 games. Everett still has a long way to go to even reach his draft status. McVay wants to make sure he gets more out of Everett and he should. It’s not Everett doesn’t have the tools to succeed. He ran a 4.62 at the combine which is a good time for a tight end.
The problem is how many balls are there really to go around? Tyler Higbee, Robert Woods, Brandin Cooks, and Cooper Kupp are already on the roster. He does know Jared Goff is the quarterback too, right? As much as McVay should try to better utilize Everett, is it even possible? Not to mention LA already give Higbee a horrible contract worth more than $7.5 per year.
