The Seahawks have a new quarterback in Seattle and it’s hard to hate the team’s approach here. After trading Geno Smith to the Raiders for a third round pick, they upgraded the position while also getting a free draft pick to do so. Sam Darnold has signed with the Seahawks on a three-year deal.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network was the first to report the news:
The full terms of the deal are as follows. The former USC product gets 3 years worth a total of $100.5 million. That comes with $55M guaranteed and $37.5M in Year 1 of the deal.
Darnold, 27, had a fantastic year in Minnesota last year. It’s a matter of can he do it again without Kevin O’Connell and Justin Jefferson on his side? Darnold posted a 35-12 TD to INT ratio which is a huge upgrade on what Geno Smith was able to do.
There is a positive here for Seattle. They have a ton of draft capital to further upgrade this team and Darnold isn’t exactly going to be asked to save the franchise. He’s going to be working hand in hand with Klint Kubiak who he has prior familiarity with in San Francisco. Kubiak runs a similar system that O’Connell does so Darnold isn’t exactly walking into foreign territory.
Right now, the biggest question that remains for Seattle is how they’re going to replace DK Metcalf after they traded him to Pittsburgh. Finding that replacement will be easier said than done but regardless, it’s hard to hate Seattle’s approach. Now they just have to nail the extra draft picks they have been gift wrapped.
