The hits just don’t stop. Arguably the best closer in baseball Felix Bautista will miss all of 2024 because of Tommy John surgery. Now arguably the best starting pitching in the sport will suffer the same fate. Sandy Alcantara will miss the 2024 MLB Season after undergoing TJ surgery. Just awful news for the Marlins.
Alcantara put out his own statement on the news regarding his injury.
“I am most saddened for the great Marlins fans, who were so supportive of me and the team this year,” Alcantara said in a statement posted on Instagram.
“I give this game my all, I give this city my all,” Alcantara said. “And so I promise I will not take a day off as I push to be back better than ever. I will miss pitching but I plan to be around the team as much as possible.”
Alcantara, 28, posted a 7-12 record with a 4.14 ERA. That was his worst ERA mark since his rookie year with the Cardinals. That may indicate that Sandy wasn’t feeling like himself all season. Alcantara still posted his usual 151 strikeouts across 184 2/3 innings in 2023.
The good news is that the Marlins rotation isn’t a completely barren unit without Alcantara. Jesús Luzardo, Braxton Garrett and Eury Pérez are still there at the top of the rotation. Still, given the amount of innings that Alcantara throws, replacing him will be no easy task for next season.
