Sam Darnold had a rough couple of years for the New York Jets. After being traded in the offseason to the Carolina Panthers, Darnold looks to the next part of his career. Darnold expressed he did not play up to his own standard for the Jets and takes full responsibility for his poor play. As the Jets start a new era with Zach Wilson, Darnold spoke about his time with New York ahead of their week one matchup.
“I feel like, for me, every opportunity I’ve found a way to kind of take advantage of,” Darnold said, via David Newton of ESPN. “The Jets was kind of the first time in my life that I got something — and that was taken away from me, for multiple reasons. … I definitely didn’t play good enough in my stint there. And I put it on myself. We had a good system in New York,” Darnold said. “And there were countless plays where I messed up a read or I didn’t throw it to the open guy.”

The Sam Darnold/ Adam Gase experiment was a disaster. I thought this was a classy move by Darnold to come out and in a way clear the air ahead of their matchup. While I think Gase got the majority of hate, Darnold’s play was nothing to ride home about. In 38 games for the Jets, Darnold completed 59.8 percent of his passes for 8,097 yards compiling a 13-25 record.
Talent has never been the question when it comes to Sam, it is the decision-making and surrounding factors that will determine his success. Darnold was subject to a number of things in New York that hindered his development. First, Adam Gase should have never been hired and was obviously a train wreck of a human being. Second, he was never given the requisite talent in order to win big in this league. In Carolina, Darnold gets an upgraded supporting cast with Christain McCaffrey, Robby Anderson, DJ Moore, and Terrace Marshall. Combine that talent with OC Joe Brady and a top-heavy division and this Panthers team could make a wild card appearance.
Week One, Darnold vs Wilson, sign me up.
