The Saints Should Trade For Tua Tagovailoa

Whether it be fair or unfair, the Miami Dolphins have moved on from Tua Tagovailoa. The Deshaun Watson rumors are more than just feelers and it seems like only a matter of time until he’s in Miami. It’s time for other teams to consider the possibility of trying to reroute Tagovailoa in a three team trade. The New Orleans Saints should absolutely be calling.

Is there a better fit than New Orleans? Bullish Tagovailoa believers such as myself always linked the former Alabama quarterback to Drew Brees. Tagovailoa is just more mobile which is a positive for the modern NFL anyway. Tagovailoa is more comfortable in the short passing game. His accuracy is the number one calling card.

Like with Brees, Sean Payton was the perfect coach for him. The deep shots and chunk plays will come. The important thing is Tua could thrive in this system and complete 70% of his balls like Brees did. The base line numbers for Tua are significantly higher than when Brees played in San Diego.

Through 15 starts, the numbers are actually really encouraging despite the hate from the media. There are a lot of awesome quarterbacks that didn’t complete 65% of their throws through 15 starts. The last three weeks or so, you can see Tua has turned a bit of a corner which was expected given the fact that he’s finally getting over the gruesome hip injury.

What a weird twist it would be. Like Brees, the injury side of things is probably the biggest concern here. Like Brees, the Dolphins would botch things again. Except this time, they found a way to acquire the most efficient passer in college football history and found a way to screw things up. Consider the fact that Tua plays for the worst offensive line in the league, zero running game, and an organization that doesn’t want him, he’s playing very well.

I’m not saying the Saints should be so quick to pull the plug on Jameis Winston. He’s played fairly well and was finding a way to win games. It is, however, another option. The 2022 NFL Draft is not a strong quarterback draft and New Orleans won’t have a high pick, to begin with. Tua is the top talent they can acquire.

When Tua Tagovailoa gets moved this offseason, the New Orleans Saints should be the team all over it. Plus, how funny would it be that the Saints found a way to discover gold because the Dolphins decided to throw up on themselves?
