Saddiq Bey signs three-year deal with Wizards

Saddiq Bey has signed a three-year, $19 million deal with the Washington Wizards, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski was first to report earlier this week.

According to Wizards beat writer Josh Robbins of The Athletic, the deal will have $1 million in unlikely incentives that could net it to $20 million. The deal will be without a player or team option.

At the time of this publishing, it has not been disclosed what those incentives could be.

Bey suffered a torn ACL in early March that ended his 2023-24 season. He was scheduled to enter restricted free agency, though the Atlanta Hawks did not offer him his $8.5 million qualifying offer, thereby making him an unrestricted free agent.

Despite being inefficient from 3-point range, Bey was still a quality role player off Atlanta’s bench before his injury. He averaged 13.7 points and 6.5 rebounds on 41.6 percent shooting, including 31.6 percent from beyond the arc and 83.7 percent from the free-throw line across 63 games. In four seasons, he posted 14.1 points and 5.2 boards on 40.8/35.2/84.2 shooting splits, finishing fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting in 2020-21 with the Detroit Pistons.

There will be no pressure for him to return this year if he’s not able to, which was probably a reason why his agency netted him a three-year deal as opposed to just a one- or two-year deal. He’s got additional financial security and will be on a team-friendly deal for one of the worst teams in the East that can be moved in two years if he shines.

His new salary is projected to start at $6.0 million and will conclude at $6.6 million in ’26-27, his age-27 season–less than four percent of the cap, per Spotrac.

Though Bey does join a fairly crowded wing room that features Kyle Kuzma–on another team-friendly deal–Bilal Coulibaly, Corey Kispert and rookie Kyshawn George. There can be plenty of pieces that move over the next year, which could open up opportunities for Bey, a quality 3-and-D wing when healthy. I like this investment for Washington, even though he will presumably miss the impending season.
