Kings to re-unite with executive Scott Perry

The Sacramento Kings were quick to part ways with general manager Monte McNair Wednesday night after the team’s 120-106 season-ending loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Well, they were even quicker to find the next man in charge.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Kings are reuniting with longtime executive Scott Perry, who was the team’s vice president of basketball operations for three months in 2017. Perry, 62, last worked in an NBA front office in 2020 with the New York Knicks, where he spent three seasons.

According to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, Perry was always viewed as the frontrunner to replace McNair, who was ousted after five seasons with Sacramento. According to Slater, Perry had a “strong working relationship” with Kings owner Vivek Ranadive during his time with Sacramento.

If you fire a general manager, you want to make sure you have a replacement pretty quickly at this time of year because the draft is barely two months away. You want to make sure you have pre-draft workouts settled and a proper staff in line for when those begin next month. Perry will also be tasked with bringing in the Kings’ next coach, whether it’s interim Doug Christie or someone else.

After bringing in DeMar DeRozan last summer and trading De’Aaron Fox ahead of the deadline, the Kings’ roster is a mess. Zach LaVine (acquired in the Fox trade), Domantas Sabonis and DeRozan will be on the books for a combined $116 million next season with Keegan Murray due to an extension; Sabonis, DeRozan, Malik Monk, Keon Ellis and Jonas Valanciunas will be extension-eligible after 2025-26.

They will have money coming off the books this summer, but they still have plenty of decisions to make since they don’t own their 2025 first. How do you maximize this core and shift the deck chairs around in a very competitive West? Well, Perry will now be in charge of answering those questions–and more.
