The Sacramento Kings have extended head coach Mike Brown for three more years, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report late Friday evening.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania was the first with the terms of the deal, with the extension being worth $30 million over those three seasons.
The two sides, reportedly, were far apart from one another as early as 24 hours ago, when it was reported that Sacramento offered Brown $21 million over three years with the possibility of getting to $27 million. Now, Brown, the 2022-23 NBA Coach of the Year, gets a well-deserved raise from the organization he took to the playoffs for the first time in nearly two decades.
In two seasons with Sacramento, he’s gone 94-70 (.573), the team’s best two-season stretch since it also went 94-70 from 2004-06. Amid the unfortunate late-season injuries to Malik Monk and Kevin Huerter, the Kings fell shy of the postseason after losing their second play-in game to the New Orleans Pelicans after beating Golden State, who knocked them out of the first round the year prior.
Brown’s done a phenomenal job with the hand he’s been dealt, maximizing both De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis offensively. He’s also done a fine job developing very good role players in Monk and Huerter plus the youngsters in Keegan Murray and Keon Ellis.
Most importantly, Brown’s built a culture … and a very good one, at that. His players play. His players have bought in. His players compete. They reflect the infectious energy that he has on the sideline and (from what we’ve seen) in practices. He holds his best accountable when it’s needed.
All that matters.
Light the beam, Mike!
