Russell Westbrook is (Maybe?) heading back to his hometown. After a contentious Twitter battle between NBA insiders Adrian Wojnarowski and Shams Charania, it looks like Shams has emerged victorious. Woj conceded after posting details of a Westbrook to LA trade. In exchange for the 2017 MVP, the Wizards are receiving Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and the Lakers’ first-round pick in this years’ draft. The former UCLA point guard is poised to make a return to his native Los Angeles and compete for a championship alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Homecoming aside, this is a shaky at best trade for the Lakers. Personally, I was hoping Woj’s original tweet was correct. That deal was composed of Kyle Kuzma and Harrell in exchange for Kings sharpshooter Buddy Hield. Instead, GM Rob Pelinka appears to be putting together a Big 3 to rival the Brooklyn Nets’ trio on the East Coast. Westbrook has never been an above-average 3-point shooter, and the Lakers’ most glaring need to fans was to space the floor. Now, it looks like they took a step backwards instead of forwards. If there’s any benefit to this trade, it gives King James the ability to take the ball out of his hands. Other than that, I truly don’t see much upside for LA. We all know Trey Daubert’s feelings towards Brodie, and now it’s time to see if Westbrook will ruin yet another team in his hall-of-fame career.
Another takeaway from this trade is that the Lakers are committed to this window. They have no viable first-round picks in the picture for upwards of the next half-decade. As a result, an aging LeBron will have his work cut out for him. He did finally get the point guard he was longing for, but was it the right one? Let’s wait and see.
