After 17 seasons in five different jerseys, Rudy Gay is calling it a career. Gay, now 38, announced his retirement in an article with The Players’ Tribune. In it, Rudy said he feels like the “luckiest guy in the world” for everything that he accomplished on the court. He also mentioned that he is looking forward to spending retirement with his loving family.
Gay last played in the NBA for the Utah Jazz. His final game was on March 22, 2023.
Rudy played college basketball at the University of Connecticut from 2004-2006. He was the Big East rookie of the year as a freshman, and as a sophomore, he was a first-team all-American.
He then entered the 2006 NBA draft, where he was taken by the Memphis Grizzlies with the eighth overall pick. Gay spent the next seven seasons in Memphis, helping the team win its first-ever playoff series in 2010-11. After this, Rudy bounced around the league for the next decade. He was traded to the Toronto Raptors during the 2012-13 season, only to be traded again early in the 2013-14 season to Sacramento. He spent the next four seasons as a King before going to San Antonio for another four. Gay’s last stop was in Utah, where he played two seasons for the Jazz.
Actually, Gay was on the Warriors in September 2023 after signing a one-year deal with them. He was cut in the preseason after averaging 2.0 points on 33.3% three-point shooting and never played a regular season game with the squad.
Gay played in 1,139 games (including playoffs) with a career average of 15.8 points with a 45.2 shooting percentage. He also averaged 5.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.
I think we can all agree it was time for Rudy Gay to hang up the jersey, and he finally agreed with us.
