Report: Nico Harrison’s job currently isn’t in jeopardy

Over a month after a catastrophic trade deadline, it doesn’t appear that Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison will be losing his job any time soon.

Harrison unexpectedly traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for a package headlined by Anthony Davis followed by trading Quentin Grimes to the Philadelphia 76ers for an injured Caleb Martin. Obviously trading Doncic, a top-3 player in the sport, was substantially worse, but both had negative ramifications on the team’s current and future outlook as it looks to try and build a future contender.

But according to ClutchPoints’ NBA insider Brett Siegel, the team doesn’t plan on making any immediate changes in their front office, regardless of how much trust has been lost between the fanbase and brass.

“There are no indications suggesting Harrison’s job is in jeopardy at this time, sources said,” Siegel reported. “[Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont] has continued to defend him, and the Mavs are committed to seeing this vision through.Harrison’s goal in Dallas was to win right now. By trading Doncic for Davis to attempt to do so, the Mavs have sacrificed their entire long-term future.

“No matter how you look at this situation with Harrison and his comments saying he will take accountability for any mistakes made, there is no right path moving forward for Dumont and the organization. The Mavericks don’t have control over their future draft picks, Doncic isn’t coming back, and the damage has been done.

“A decision to remove Harrison and go in a different direction would certainly open the door for Mavs fans to regain trust in the new ownership and leadership that took over for Cuban. While this wouldn’t fully repair the rift, it would at least offer some sense of hope to the fans in a new era without Doncic.”

The Mavericks, currently the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference at 32-31, are beleaguered by injury with Kyrie Irving‘s season-ending ACL injury plus other injuries to Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, P.J. Washington and Dereck Lively. To put it nicely, it’s been a season from hell for Dallas and its fanbase. It would make sense if they were rightfully checked for the season … or for the next five years, at least.

Harrison did sign an extension last summer after acquiring Washington and Gafford ahead of the deadline. Those two players–plus, Doncic and Irving–propelled the Mavericks to their first NBA Finals appearance since 2010-11. Now, the arrow is heading straight down to the abyss with no end in sight; the basketball gods are angry, and understandably so.
