Report: NBA discussing new All-Star game format

In life, there are plenty of constants, though one thing that hasn’t been constant in the last several years has been the NBA’s All-Star game format.

According to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, the league is heading back to the drawing board, this time discussing a potential four-team, tourney-style format.

According to Charania, the new tourney-style format would consist of four teams playing each other — i.e. Team 1 v. 2, Team 3 v. 4 — with the winners moving on to the championship round. He notes that this new format is being discussed by a committee of “governors, team executives, players, coaches and union personnel.”

One player that has had specific input in the new format is Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, Charania notes; the 2025 All-Star game will be in the Bay Area on Feb. 16.

The starters for the All-Star game have been chosen by a 50-25-25 fan, player and media vote split–with two guards and three forwards earning the nod for each side. Though the seven reserve players are chosen by head coaches from each conference without the ability to vote for their own players.

With this four-team format, how are teams going to be divided up? Is there going to be a draft? Are there still going to be 24 total players — with six per team — or will there be more? Is there going to be a target score, similar to how there was for the Rising Stars game, which was 40 for the two semifinal games and 25 for the championship?

I’m intrigued by the format. I’m not sure if there will ever be a competitive All-Star format, but any and all suggestions should be considered because it’s been a bad look for the NBA for years.
