ESPN has been doing some damage the last few weeks. Showing no mercy to any employee that stands in their way, and boy, are they running through them. TV personal Bomani Jones is the next victim of the layoffs. The media giant is reportedly not expected to renew Jones’s contract at this point, according to Front Office Sports.
Jones has been a talented TV personality and journalist for some time now. Even last year, Jones had the second-highest rating across all ESPN podcasts, and now, he could be the next to see the door. Jones has been the face of the podcast “The Right Time with Bomani Jones,” but now ESPN has no business in bringing back one of their best money makers.
In telling Front Office Sports, Jones gave a great example of the sports media world in today’s age.
“The economic fate of people in sports media is getting dicier and dicier by the day,” Jones told FOS. “I think the ESPN layoffs were the beginning of it in a lot of ways. Seeing what happened [with] the New York Times shutting down their sports department and they moved those people to other desks, but at some point they’re probably going to deem those people to be surplus and they’re not going to be there anymore.
“Streaming can only to me become profitable if there are fewer players in the game, we just have so much stuff,” Jones said. “There is money being made on streaming, there just is a lot of money being spent on streaming that doesn’t necessarily generate the returns that one would expect.”
The ESPN layoffs have been mind-boggling, and it looks like they won’t stop anytime soon. Click here for a full list of the ESPN layoffs so far.
