Report: Devin Carter received lottery pick promise ahead of 2024 NBA Draft

The 2024 NBA Draft is roughly three weeks away. As the days creep up, there will be more leaks disclosed on who worked out for who, and in this case, which players are already receiving “promises” relative to their draft position.

One of the best combo guards in the class, Providence’s Devin Carter, may have received one of those promises, according to The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor.

“League sources say that Devin Carter has received a promise somewhere in the lottery,” O’Connor reported Tuesday in his latest Mock Draft.

There’s multiple other promises from this pre-draft process. DaRon Holmes, a consensus top-30 player, reportedly canceled multiple workouts due to a perceived promise; Bronny James, the son of all-time leading scorer LeBron James, reportedly decided to only work out with the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers due to a potential promise of one of those teams selecting him.

According to NBA Draft Network’s consensus big board, Devin Carter is heralded as the No. 13 prospect of the 2024 draft class, sandwiched in between Duke’s Jared McCain (draft profile here) and USC’s Isaiah Collier.

O’Connor had Carter, who’s 6-foot-2 with a 6-foot-9 wingspan, going No. 11 to the Chicago Bulls, who have to figure out what they want to do with the impending free agencies of DeMar DeRozan and Patrick Williams, among others. Alex Caruso is also extension eligible while both Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu will be entering the penultimate years of their respective contracts, per Spotrac.

I am a huge fan of Carter, and for my own selfish reasons, would hope he’d fall No. 15 to the Miami Heat, where his dad, Anthony Carter, played four years as an undrafted free agent from 1999-2003.

In his draft profile, I had Carter being a projected lottery pick, specifically stating that it would be difficult for me to see him fall outside of that range. It looks like he may have received that guarantee, too; I didn’t mention Chicago, but teams I did mention (outside of Miami) were  San Antonio (two picks at No. 4, 8), Oklahoma City (12) and Utah (10).
