Report: Mavericks could target Jrue Holiday this offseason

In case you may have missed it, surprisingly enough, the Dallas Mavericks #CapturedTheFlagg™!!! However, they still have plenty of work to do to build a legitimate winner around Cooper Flagg in the short- and long-term.

Their first order of business will be finding a point guard amid Kyrie Irving‘s torn ACL, potentially sidelining him for most of, if not all of the 2025-26 season.

Meanwhile, the team they faced in the NBA Finals nearly one calendar year ago, the Boston Celtics, could be parting with multiple pieces from their core this offseason to alleviate their luxury tax bill. One of those players could be Jrue Holiday, who’s owed $104 million over the next three seasons.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavericks are “expected to at least explore” a trade for Holiday.

Acquiring Jrue Holiday could be difficult for Mavericks:

Stein also mentioned that Lonzo Ball and Chris Paul, an unrestricted free agent, could be options as a stop-gap for Dallas. But for the sake of conversation, let’s talk about Holiday.

Holiday, who turns 35-years-old in June, averaged 11.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game in 2024-25. He shot 44.3 percent from the floor, including 35.3 percent from 3-point range–his worst since 2019-20–and 90.9 percent from the free-throw line.

Boston enters the summer roughly $32 million above the first apron and $20 million above the second apron, according to Spotrac. Its repeater tax bill is expected to exceed $230 million. Dallas, on the other hand, is roughly $800K below the first apron and $13 million below the second apron.

Dallas would not be able to acquire more salary than it takes back if it exceeds the first apron post-trade, likely complicating the packages that can be sent for Holiday if it’s a two-team trade.

Any package that includes Holiday being sent to the Mavericks would likely have to be a multi-team deal. Paul (on a minimum) and Ball are more realistic options, unless the Mavericks can shed more salary elsewhere to bring in Holiday at an inexpensive cost.
