Report: Cavaliers expect Donovan Mitchell to sign extension

Donovan Mitchell‘s impending extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers could decide the course of action for not only how they proceed in free agency, but how multiple teams proceed this offseason.

The 6-foot-2 guard is eligible to sign a four-year, $208.5 million extension with the franchise–just two years after getting traded to them by the Utah Jazz. According to NBA reporter Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, there’s a growing expectation that Mitchell re-signs.

“A league-wide expectation only grows that Mitchell will sign a contract extension with the club that acquired him from Utah back in September 2022,” Fischer wrote Wednesday.

According to Fischer, the Cavaliers are not expected to move on from any of their “Big 4” in Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley or Jarrett Allen, who is entering the penultimate year of his deal (worth $20 million both seasons), according to Spotrac.

Multiple teams have previously been linked to Mitchell, who has two years and $72.5 left on his current contract with a player option for the last year, including the oft-interested Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans, possibly. If he doesn’t sign the extension, it could be a bidding war around the league for the five-time All-Star.

He averaged 26.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists last season, shooting 46.2 percent from the floor, 36.8 percent from 3-point range and 86.5 percent from the free-throw line. He was in line to finish in the top-6 voting for the second consecutive season, but did not meet the 65-game minimum, playing just 55 games.

Donovan Mitchell is perhaps the biggest building block for players who are extension-eligible this offseason. Do you think he should sign it? Let us know in the comments!
