Report: There are ‘active discussions’ between Grizzlies, Nets for Dorian Finney-Smith

We are nearly one month away from the Feb. 6 trade deadline, when leaguewide discussions and rumors begin to percolate.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Memphis Grizzlies, who are winners of their last 19, could be looking to bolster their squad with a coveted 6-foot-7 3-and-D wing from the Brooklyn Nets: Dorian Finney-Smith.

“League sources say there are active discussions between the teams on the trade scenario in the story: John Konchar and Luke Kennard to the Nets for DFS,” Stein tweeted Saturday.

“The Nets are known to be seeking a first-round draft pick from the Grizzlies in any potential deal for Dorian Finney-Smith. It is expected the Grizzlies would receive second-round draft compensation if a trade comes to a fruition.”

The Nets are known to be seeking a first-round draft pick from the Grizzlies in any potential deal for Dorian Finney-Smith.

It is expected the Grizzlies would receive second-round draft compensation if a trade comes to a fruition.

This story follows Nets Daily, a reputable Brooklyn Nets SB Nation blog, tweeted Saturday that, “multiple league sources Nets and Grizzlies are talking about possible trade involving DFS for John Konchar, Luke Kennard and protected first rounder, possibly in 2026.” He followed suit saying there was uncertainty about how close the deal would be to complete plus the protections being a concern.

The Grizzlies 2026 first-round pick is interesting because it has a slight chance of moving up in the draft if things go completely south for the Suns next season.

Finney-Smith, 31, should be one of the more attainable wings ahead of the deadline. He’s currently in the penultimate season of a four-year, $55.6 million deal; he’s on the books for $14.9 million this season with a $15.4 million player option for 2025-26, according to Spotrac.

He’s having the best shooting season of his career, averaging 10.4 points on a career-best 43.5 percent shooting from 3-point range. His 3-point percentage is nearly seven percentage points higher than his career high and four points greater than his previous career-best (39.5 percent) setin 2021-22 with the Dallas Mavericks.

In a vacuum, Finney-Smith wouldn’t necessarily raise Memphis’ ceiling–though he would elevate their floor. He’s streaky, but he’s a very good 3-and-D wing who can defend multiple positions and is an adequate rebounder for his size.

Kennard would be able to veto any trade involving him because he would have his bird rights revoked; Konchar could benefit from new scenery, though the asking price should be greater (Santi Aldama?) than just him plus draft capital.
