Release Date Confirmed For Minecraft Movie

The upcoming Minecraft movie has finally been given a release date. The film, based on the massively successful sandbox video game, will hit theatres on April 4, 2025. A while from now to be sure, but now with a confirmed date, we now know when the movie will be on the big screen.

What we Actually Know

While a release date has been confirmed, little is known about the movie itself beyond a few essential facts.

The Minecraft movie will be a live action adaptation of the game, with actor Jason Momoa and director Jared Hess tied to the project. Hess previously directed movies like Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. As for Momoa, he is, so far, the only notable actor tied in with the project. Though, depending on where the Minecraft movie goes, we might see some other names pop up in the cast.

Is a Live Action Adaptation a Good Idea?

The biggest point of contention around this project is that it is meant to be a live action film, and whether or not having a the Minecraft movie be a live action project.

While video game movies and TV shows have been getting more and more successful, with projects like Sonic, The Last of Us, and Arcane leading the charge on what can be considered “good” video game movies and TV, having a live action version of Minecraft, a game based on everything being made out of blocks, doesn’t seem like a smart choice.

Perhaps the Minecraft movie would instead benefit as an animated project. With the recent financial success of the Mario movie, fully animated video game movies have now proven that they can work. But it doesn’t seem likely the production will switch over to an animated format any time soon. So, if this film is to be live action, they better do it perfectly.
