Luis Perales will receive Tommy John surgery.
Reports have confirmed that Boston Red Sox prospect Luis Perales will require Tommy John surgery. Perales, 21, is certain to miss the remainder of the 2024 season. As Tommy John has a rather lengthy recovery period, he is likely to miss a significant portion of 2025 as well. Red Sox manager Alex Cora has confirmed that Perales will be consulting with Dr. Jeff Dugas, a surgeon with experience treating high-profile athletes.
Luis Perales is no stranger to frustration and detours, sadly. The right-handed pitcher was brought into the fold by the Red Sox at just seventeen years old in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 shut down the minor leagues, and his 2021 season was limited to a single appearance due to injury. Since then, Perales had been making steady improvements. His 2022 and 2023 seasons saw his ERA fluctuate, peaking at 4.95 single-A+ and dipping as low as 1.08 in RK. Perales will wrap his 2024 season with nine total starts between single and high-A. He will end those nine starts with a 2.94 ERA and 56 strikeouts.
One can’t help but feel for Perales in this situation. Following a bumpy beginning, and right as his career seems to be on the upswing, he suffers a massive setback like this. Tommy John surgeries generally see a turn around time of 14-18 months. Fortunately for Perales, he is still extremely young, and will have time to bounce back. Hopefully, by the time Perales is ready to make his return, the Red Sox will have bounced back as well. Boston is experiencing what looks to be another dull season in a series of dull seasons. They currently sit third in the AL East at 38-35, trailing the first place New York Yankees by 11.5 games.
