Smart trade! New Chief Baseball Officer, Craig Breslow is off to a hot start. Breslow made his first trade while being in charge of the Red Sox after he dumped Luis Urias to the Mariners. All that really needs to be said is bravo, Breslow.
Red Sox fans should be thrilled with this trade for a number of different reasons.
A: For those who watched my offseason guide, you know how much I tried to stress this. Under no circumstance did it make sense to tender Urias a contract. Especially one projected to be around $4.7 million. Especially for a guy who hit .194 a season ago while already having too many second baseman. He needed to go and it should be viewed as a bonus that Boston got an asset out of the deal.
B: Speaking of the asset, I didn’t think Boston would come away with anything for Urias, let alone this. Isaiah Campbell comes to Boston in this deal and it only adds another capable arm in that bullpen. Campbell, 26, posted a 4-1 record, 2.83 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 33 strikeouts in 28.2 innings during his rookie campaign. Campbell is cheap, controllable, and productive. Thank you, Seattle.
C: Chaim Bloom should have never traded for Urias, in the first place. The Sox gave up Bradley Blalock in that deal whom Milwaukee feels is good enough to be placed on their 40-man roster. We’ll see what Blalock turns into but it’s possible that Bloom gave up a really nice asset who can throw serious heat. Adding Campbell certainly helps offset that.
So far so good with Breslow. This is the type of deal that gives you hope that he has an idea of what to do. That’s all you can really ask for.
