The Red Sox couldn’t have handled top prospect Roman Anthony worse, and it turns out we’re only at the tip of the iceberg here. We don’t just have a leadership problem happening with the Red Sox. We have a full-blown civil war going on between the coaching staff and the front office.
The dysfunction going on in Boston is far worse than people understand right now. Apparently, the coaching staff used Roman Anthony to essentially make a political statement towards the front office.
“Another error came during Roman Anthony’s debut, when he misplayed a ball in right field. The next day, Anthony was sent out to run outfield drills in front of the media,” Lee wrote.
“Multiple people in the organization noted that under previous regimes, that kind of instruction would’ve taken place behind closed doors. This time, it felt like a message from the coaching staff to the front office. One team source described the message as deliberate: ‘This is what we still have to teach, at the big-league level.’”
When you factor the story in about the AI interviews, it’s very clear what’s going on here. The coaching staff is trying to develop the player with an actual coach. The front office wants to do it via robot, and if the advice doesn’t correlate with the swing path science, they get a slap on the wrist.
Anthony, 21, is so damn talented it probably won’t matter, but it’s hard not to be worried about the actual player development going on here. If stories like this are being leaked, what else is happening behind the scenes in terms of getting the most out of the players on the field?
