The Ravens wanted to add a safety to pair with Eric Weddle in the Baltimore secondary in 2017. They did just that adding Tony Jefferson via free agency this offseason. ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Dianna Russini reported the news on Jefferson first.
Jefferson, 25, is an upgrade in the secondary as he is expected to replace Lardarius Webb. Cutting Webb, which is widely expected now, will save the Ravens $5.5 million in additional cap space. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the 5th best safety in the NFL this past season. Webb interestingly enough wasn’t far behind ranked 15th overall player grade.
In 2016 Jefferson recorded 92 tackles over the course of 14 starts. He failed to make an interception this past season.
