The Ravens are actually spending money on their backup quarterback. Something that hasn’t been the case the last few years rolling with Tyler Huntley and Josh Johnson for the most part. Cooper Rush now changes that trend and will get a decent sized deal to be the backup for Lamar Jackson.
The NFL Network tag team duo of Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero were the first to report the news:
Rush, 31, will end up signing a two-year deal worth $12.2 million. posted career highs in yards (1,844) and touchdowns (12) in 2024. The Cowboys went 4-4 down the stretch after Dak Prescott missed the remainder of last year via injury. The full resume for the former Central Michigan product includes throwing for 3,463 yards with 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 38 career games.
I get why the Ravens wanted to do this. They have been pretty bad when Lamar Jackson hasn’t been healthy. Baltimore is 4-10 over the last six years including playoffs when Jackson has been out of the lineup because of injury. The only problem is I’m not sure Rush actually provides any upside given that he has some of the worst arm strength in the league. I’m not sure he’s worth paying given the fact that his best quality is that he can semi manage the game by not making stupid mistakes.
Rush has been with Dallas since 2017 and they’re going to be looking for a new backup for the first time since then. Trey Lance is out there in free agency and Will Grier is the only other guy on the roster beyond Dak. It’s very possible the Cowboys decide to draft someone at the position.
