What are the Flames going to do with Rasmus Andersson? Calgary is out of a playoff spot but they’re also more so in the middle than the bottom of the Western Conference. They’re clearly in rebuild mode but also don’t want to be terrible at the same time. Andersson is certainly one guy who could bring back a return to really kickstart this rebuild.
The trade deadline is still a good amount of time away but the Flames D man made it clear he would prefer to stay in Calgary. Oh, and that he hates the Oilers and Canucks too.
“I love playing here and I’ve always loved playing here and that’s never going to change,” said the Flames defenceman.
“I hate the Oilers, I hate the Canucks and that’s just the way I am.
“Of course I would love to stay here, but I’ve heard from everyone else who has been in my situation that it’s a business.
“So we’ll see what happens.”
Andersson, 28, has 1.5 years remaining on his contract that carries an AAV of $4.55 million. His hope is that he can re-sign long term once eligible in July but he also says it’s out of his hands.
“I’ve got no say in it – I have a six-team no trade list, so it’s out of my hands,” he said.
“July 1 is when I can re-sign, and we’re in January.
“It’s all in Connie (Craig Conroy) and Don’s (Don Maloney’s) hands what happens to me until my contract is up, unless we find a deal.
“It’s not like I’m sitting on a full no-move.”
We’ll see what happens here but you almost can’t put a price tag on guys like this. Loyal to the core who have extra hate in their heart against rival teams. These are guys you want to build around. At this point, get the framework of an extension done. If they can’t extend Andersson, then the trade route will have to be explored.
