Raptors Retiring Jersey For Vince Carter

The Toronto Raptors are reportedly retiring Vince Carter’s #15 jersey. The ceremony will take place on November 2nd, 2024, when the Raptors host the Sacramento Kings. Carter’s jersey will be the first to be retired in Raptor’s history.

Carter was a draft day trade to the Raptors and was originally picked fifth overall in the 1998 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors. In Carter’s seven seasons up in Toronto, he averaged 23.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. Vince is undoubtedly one of the Raptor’s best players ever, leading the team to its first-ever playoff series and its first-ever playoff series win. He even scored the first points in their stadium, the Scotiabank Arena. He was also the 1999 NBA Rookie of the Year. Although Carter was an efficient scorer, he was known for his crazy dunks, particularly in the NBA’s annual Slam Dunk Contest.

The Brooklyn Nets traded for Vince Carter during the 2004-2005 season. The Nets are also going to retire Vince’s jersey. That ceremony will take place on January 25th, 2025, when the Nets host the Miami Heat at the Barclays Center. Carter will have a busy couple of months as he prepares for his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in October. It’s great to see him finally receive the recognition he deserves for being one of the most iconic players of the early 2000s.

Carter didn’t know when to hang up the shoes, though, as he played for six more teams after the Nets. Most people believe he held on a little too long. He holds the record for most seasons played in NBA history at 22, although it seems like LeBron James may take that record over, as he is still a very efficient player who is currently entering his 22nd season.
