With Sam Darnold set to start the rest of the year for the Carolina Panthers, Baker Mayfield wanted out so that he could show case himself. Baker got his wishes as the Panthers released him. It didn’t take long for the former Browns quarterback to land on his feet. The Rams have claimed Baker off waivers and plan to start him in short order.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:
The Rams have currently been trotting out the poo poo platter of John Wolford and Bryce Perkins so it’s not super surprising the Rams claimed Baker. With Matthew Staford out for the season, this is Baker’s job for the remainder of the season.
I’m not even going to guess the Rams tactics here. They have no reason to care about tanking since Detroit owns there pick. I’m not sure if Baker helps or hurts their chances of winning games. This offensive line right now is so battered that I’m not sure anybody is going to fully thrive under center right now despite McVay’s brilliance. It also doesn’t help that Cooper Kupp is out for the season too.
Division rival San Francisco is sticking with Brock Purdy. In fact, word on the street is that the 49ers didn’t even put a claim in. It’s Purdy and Josh Johnson the rest of the way for the 49ers. Maybe things would have changed had Baker hit the open market but nonetheless, LA becomes the home for Baker.
