The Raiders decided switch play callers for the 2017 season. Oakland has decided not to renew the contract of offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news.
The Raiders have since made the promotion of Todd Downing official as well making him the new offensive coordinator. Parting ways with Musgrave could prove to be a mistake. His unit ranked 6th in total offense in 2016. It remains to be seen what kind of impact the loss of Musgrave will prove to be as Oakland’s explosive offense made this move a bit of a head scratcher. Downing may have forced the Raiders hand with the promotion as it was rumored that he was a candidate for other OC jobs in the NFL.
One team that is looking for a new offensive coordinator are the New York Jets. Chan Gailey retired after the conclusion of the regular season. Musgrave could also be an option for one of the 6 teams looking for a new head coach as well.
