Pirates, Red Sox Complete Odd Swap Involving Nick Yorke

Craig Breslow. How do you even describe this guy? The guy may as well be a Chaim Bloom clone who instead favors pitching because every trade he makes continues to be a waste of time. No big fish for the Red Sox. Just middling moves to stay slightly above average. That’s the world we live in. Nick Yorke is on the move to Pittsburgh after the Sox and Pirates completed a weird one-for-one trade.

Jeff Passan has reported that it’s a swap where York will go to the Pirates and Quinn Priester will go to Boston.

My initial reaction is I hate this deal. I hate it because it the Sox continue to give up prospects for deals that won’t move the needle. Maybe Priester eventually figures it out. He’s young and has former first round pick pedigree. He’s also been terrible at the MLB level.

Priester, 23, sports a 6.46 ERA across 94 2/3 innings. His AAA numbers are better at 3.81 ERA over the last three years but still not nearly good enough. He needs to stay in the minors for another 24 days and his free agency year will be moved to 2030.

Yorke, 22, is slashing 251/.325/.366 in 45 games since the promotion to AAA. He’s basically listed as the 12th, 13th, 14th best prospect in the system depending on what publication you use. The only defense to this deal for Boston is the fact that he’s 40-man eligible this offseason. Something the Sox probably didn’t want to do given the number of infielders they already have. The Vaughn Grissom deal stings worse now cause that’s probably his spot that was taken.

To close, let’s just remember that Alex Cora essentially also admitted the Danny Jansen trade was a waste of time that did nothing but create better balance.
