The Phoenix Suns’ drawn-out interview process to find their next head coach is finally complete!
According to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, the Suns will be hiring Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott as the team’s next head coach.
Ott has also spent time as an assistant or video coordinator with the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers.
Ott was one of two finalists for the job–the other being his colleague in Cleveland, Johnnie Bryant.
He will be the Suns’ fourth coach in four seasons. However, their approach this time was different, prioritizing a first-year head coach instead of a veteran voice, which clearly didn’t work. I still think the root of the issue is deeper than the head coach, but Ott could give the Suns more stability that they are looking for under new general manager Brian Gregory.
They also went through four rounds of interviews with Devin Booker reportedly being involved. That’s incredibly thorough. It also helps that Gregory spent three-plus decades as a collegiate coach (1990-2023); he knows what to look for with a coach, so I think it’s more than fair to trust the Suns’ prolonged process.
We can’t say for certain whether or not he will be a good head coach or not. There is still so much work that Gregory and owner Mat Ishbia have to do with this (very!) expensive roster, with little flexibility to do it. We’ll see how this goes. They must knock this out of the park to set up what could be a “two steps backwards, three steps forward” approach for Phoenix.
