Phillies Want An Extension For Zack Wheeler

The Phillies made an incredibly wise investment when they signed Zack Wheeler back in 2019. I tried to warn you that Wheeler was going to be awesome. At some point, you would think people would listen.

It appears that the Phillies know what they have and want to extend Wheeler’s stay in Philadelphia. The front office is prioritizing getting an extension done for their ace starter.

MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki says the Phillies “No. 1 priority is signing ace Zack Wheeler to a contract extension”. The Zolecki post comes in a lengthy interview where Dave Dombrowski gives his perspective on multiple things.

Wheeler, 33, is entering the final year of a year agreement for $118 million. Based on the way Wheeler has pitched, he’s certainly earned a raise when it comes to an average annual value perspective. The former Giants farmhand has the most fWAR (19.3) of any starter in baseball since the start of the 2020 season. Wheeler hasn’t just been a good signing. He’s arguably the most valuable pitcher in baseball. I know nobody wants to hear that but it’s the truth.

Since sporting a Phillies uniform, Wheeler has notched a 3.06 ERA, 26.7% strikeout rate, 5.3% walk rate, and 47% grounder rate over 629 1/3 regular-season innings. His postseason ERA is even lower sitting at 2.42 ERA over 63 1/3 playoff innings. He’s been everything you could have hoped for and more. Philadelphia would be very wise to get Wheeler extended.
