Some more good news for Phillies fans as the Phillies and Rob Thomson have agreed on a 2-year extension that will cover the 2023 and 2024 seasons. This deal now officially makes the Phillies manager eliminates the interim label he had on him throughout the season.
At 59 years old, this will officially be Thomson’s first managerial job, although the work he was able to do with this Phillies team this season will make you think otherwise. He had this to say shortly after the extension:
“This is a great group, one that has shown resiliency and overcome adversity all season to get us where we are today,” Thomson said. “I am honored and humbled to continue as manager of this club.”

Thomson took over for the Phillies after Joe Girardi was let go amidst a 22-29 start. Team morale was not in a good place and a change was clearly needed. And as soon as he took over there was a clear shift in the team’s culture and attitude.
After taking over, Thomson led the Phillies to a 65-46 record and immediately became one of the hottest teams in baseball. The players and city fell in love with him, and these feelings were only amplified after clinching a playoff berth for the first time in 10 years.
But it didn’t stop there. He was then able to lead the Phillies to a surprising sweep versus the Cardinals in St. Louis. It was clear that the team believed in him and that he believed in the players in a way that Girardi never could.
This deal provides the Phillies with some much-needed stability at the managerial position. The Phillies have seemed to be unable to find the right guy to hold the fort down, but Thomson looks to finally fill that hole. Guys like Girardi and Gabe Kapler have come and gone with no success, but it seems for now like the Phillies have found their guy.
Despite the success, Philadelphia is a ruthless sports town and Rob Thomson will need to continue this success if he wants to hold this job for an extended period of time. Girardi was a World Series-winning coach and we saw how quickly Dombraski was willing to pull the plug on him.
