Pete Alonso: Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s extension is ‘huge’ for 1B market

Over the weekend, Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr.–a free agent after this season–signed a 14-year, $500 million extension, the third-largest contract in MLB history behind superstars Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto.

One player that can be directly affected by it is first baseman Pete Alonso, who signed a two-year deal (with a player option) in the winter. Alonso and Guerrero play the same position, and while Alonso isn’t as young as the 26-year-old slugger, he’s one of the best power-hitting first basemen in the sport in the thick of his prime.

Alonso spoke about how Guerrero’s huge deal affected his own earlier this week–and it’s safe to say he couldn’t hide his excitement.

“This is huge for first basemen,” Alonso said, according to The Athletic‘s Will Sammon. “You can’t think of the Toronto Blue Jays without Vlad Jr. Super well deserved.”

Alonso, 30, signed a two-year, $54 million deal with the New York Mets after being one of baseball’s best position players on the market for months. He’s making $30 million in 2025 with a $24 million player option in 2026, according to Spotrac.

The lauded slugger will still be able to hit the market after his age-30 season. Guerrero’s deal–even though he projects to be a long-term designated hitter–will average out to roughly $36 million over the duration of his contract. Aside from the fact that Alonso’s agent is Scott Boras, would it be crazy for Alonso to get something similar for, say, the next 8-10 years?

The four-time All-Star is off to a blistering hot start to begin the new year, though we’re only 11 games in. He’s slashing .333/.447/.692 with five doubles, three home runs and 15 RBIs. Alonso led MLB in home runs (53) as a rookie in 2019 an drove in an MLB-most 131 runs in 2022.

Over his previous three combined seasons entering 2025, he tallied
the fourth-most home runs (120) and seventh-highest isolated power (.250; 156 ISO+). He’s got pop, and while his top-end production nor age is as good as Guerrero’s, Alonso could be a very rich man by this time next year–whether he remains in New York or elsewhere.
