Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard has won Sixth Man of the Year, the league announced Tuesday.
Prtchard won the award over Detroit’s Malik Beasley, who finished second in the NBA in made 3-pointers, and Cleveland’s Ty Jerome, who scored 28 points in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ series-opening win over the Miami Heat on Sunday.
Pritchard earned 82 of the 100 first-place votes. Beasley earned 13 and Jerome owned two. Others who received first-place votes include De’Andre Hunter and Naz Reid, who won the award last year.
While both Beasley and Jerome made a late push toward the end of the season, Pritchard was the league’s best sixth man. He led all bench players in points, threes and field goal makes while finishing third in assists and sixth in steals.
For the season, the reigning champion averaged 14.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists on 47.2 percent shooting and 40.7 percent from 3-pint range on 7.8 attempts per game. It was a career year across the board for Pritchard, who the Celtics heavily relied on to produce in their second unit.
He became the fourth-ever Celtics player to win the award, joining Kevin McHale, Bill Walton and Malcolm Brogdon. He’s an phenomenal shot maker and a sensational rebounder for a guard his size.
“Payton is one of the most dedicated players I’ve ever been around,” Brad Stevens, the Celtics’ president of basketball operations, said in a statement. “He truly loves the game and is committed to the work that goes into being great. In addition, he’s driven by winning and doing whatever it takes to help the team. Payton is a baller – and his teammates know what they are getting every single day in terms of effort, care, and commitment. For him to be honored with the award named after the great John Havlicek is a credit to all that he brings to the table for our team.”
