It’s safe to say things have worked out okay for Payton Pritchard in Boston. He was a key piece to the championship team and has already been extended past his rookie contract long term.
Well, it wasn’t always like that. In fact, Pritchard was skeptical about the Boston landing spot since day one.
The former Oregon product admits that he was shocked the Celtics picked him, largely because of the internal competition already on the roster.
“I was looking at their roster too, and I’m like, they’re guard-heavy,” Pritchard said during an appearance on “The Young Man and The Three” podcast. “They picked two point guards the draft before and I didn’t even work out for them or anything.”
Romeo Langford, Carsen Edwards, and Tremont Waters were all drafted by the Celtics in 2019. All three are gone and it’s Pritchard who is now the mainstay in the lineup. He’s a heavy favorite to win 6th man of the year and the C’s are very lucky to have him. He’s been the perfect spark plug off the bench and is the greatest half-court shot artist in the game right now.
Let’s also never forget that Brad Stevens tried to give Pritchard away for rental Jakob Poeltl, which would have been the dumbest thing of all-time. We can sit here and pretend how wonderful Stevens is but he almost screwed this thing up big time. Danny Ainge is the mastermind of this team and anyone smart won’t be convinced otherwise. It was Ainge, after all, who drafted Pritchard.
