The Philadelphia 76ers are shutting down forward Paul George for the rest of the season after receiving injections in his adductor muscle, which will keep him out for the next six weeks, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Monday.
He has played in just 41 games this season with two hyperextended knees plus finger and groin injuries. George has now missed at least 30 percent of his team’s games in four of the last six seasons.
In 41 games, the 15-year veteran played well below expectations outside of his availability, or lack thereof. He averaged 16.2 percent, shooting just 43.0 percent from the floor, 35.8 percent from 3-point range and 81.4 percent from the free-throw line.
That’s not terrible on the surface, but George made legitimately no impact on either end of the floor for much of the season despite racking up the counting stats–or provide enough tangible impact to win games in Joel Embiid’s absence.
The good bad news for 76ers fans is George will be on the books for three more seasons at $51.7 million, $54.1M and $56.6M, respectively, according to Spotrac. Embiid and George allocate for 69.1 percent of the cap in 2025-26, 66.8 percent in 2026-27 and 64.6 percent in 2027-28, George’s age-37 season assuming he opts into his player option (he will).
That’s a lot of money to delegate to two players who can’t stay healthy. We will see what Daryl Morey has up his sleeve–if anything, since he only knows how to acquire roughly a dozen players.
