Patty Mills Announced As University of Hawai’i GM

Patty Mills, a longtime fan favorite of the San Antonio Spurs, has been announced as the GM for the University of Hawai’i Men’s basketball program. In the press release provided by Hoops Rumors, Hawai’i athletics mentioned Patty Mills’ role with the University:

It says that Patty Mills will “support student-athlete mentorship and development, while contributing to key areas including recruiting, fundraising, and community engagement.”

Patty Mills said this about the opportunity:

“I’m deeply honored to join the University of Hawai’i basketball program as the new general manager.” Mills said in a statement. “This role is not only a professional milestone, but a personal one as well. Despite being from different parts of the Pacific region, as someone from the Torres Strait Islands, I feel a strong cultural connection to Hawai’i—our communities share deep respect and spiritual connection to the land, sea and sky and the strength of family and tradition.”

Patty Mills is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and this could be a sign that his playing days are over. The media still acknowledges Mills as an active member of the Los Angeles Clippers. However, he will be 37 in August and as mentioned, a free agent. He only averaged 11 minutes this year in 26 games, and his play has declined. But, he technically doesn’t have to retire. Stephen Curry is the assistant GM at Davidson, Trae Young is the assistant GM at Oklahoma, and Terrance Mann is the assistant GM at Florida State, and they are all active players. A role could be similar for Mills.

What a gig though, being at the beach and being involved with basketball? I mean, what a life. It would be high up on Chickster’s wish list to do something similar. Hawai’i isn’t exactly a league winner either, so the expectations are pretty low. I mean it just sounds like a great gig, Make the team suck a little less and go to the beach afterwards? Sign me up too.
