The New England Patriots went on a shopping spree this off-season, and the spending isn’t done, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting the team is signing former Houston Texans wide receiver Stefon Diggs to a three-year deal worth $69 million, with $26 million guaranteed. It was clear that this franchise had to get quarterback Drake Maye some help this off-season, and they did so in landing Diggs.
Maybe this is just because old age is turning me into a glass half empty kind of person, but are we sure this is a home run signing for New England? Have we forgotten that Stefon Diggs is coming off a torn ACL in late October? Sure, he could be ready by week one, but will the 31-year-old be the same? Are we also forgetting that this is the same Diggs who is notorious for turning into a ghost when the weather gets cold? How can we be so sure he is going to produce over 17 games, not just 11 or 12?
I’m not trying to be a full on hater, just trying to understand. This annual salary puts him as WR14 in the NFL in terms of annual salary, and maybe this is just me, but I couldn’t pay WR14 money to a player of the current caliber of Stefon Diggs. Just too many red flags for me. Way too many concerns.
Credit to the Patriots for showing initiative in trying to get their young quarterback some help. This year’s wide receiver class is thin in terms of bonafide WR1s but has some depth to it. But this team needed a go-to guy, and the team believes they have found that in Stefon Diggs. I will say that the pairing of Diggs and Travis Hunter could be very interesting, should New England be smart and take him if he’s there.
