The New England Patriots have joined the free agency festivities. It’s a small add but when does New England ever go big game hunting? Some things never change. The Pats are adding a running back to the room and have signed gadget guy Antonio Gibson.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network was the first to report the news:
Gibson, 25, will sign a three year contract with the Patriots. Gibson spent the first four years of his career in Washington after the Commanders selected him in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. With New England, he’s expected to be the alternate back behind Rhamondre Stevenson. I’m just glad they finally got Stenveons a respectable running mate.
The former Memphis product is really a gadget guy. A slightly worse version of Tony Pollard. He can run and catch but most importantly brings some speed to this Patriots offense. Gibson ran a 4.39 at the Combine during the year he was draft eligible. A nice change of pace guy for this offense. Gibson does still have some size at 220 so it’s not like they can’t run him down the middle. They will have options in terms of how to use the guy.
Maybe the Patriots will be less boring now. Alex Van Pelt is the new OC and we don’t exactly have a lengthy track record on how his offense functions. Time will tell how this signing proves out to be. Feel free to comment your thoughts if you have a strong take.
