Patrick Mahomes Regrets Outburst Toward Officials

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes lost his cool after a game-changing offensive offside call on wide receiver Kadarius Toney in a nailbiting loss to the Buffalo Bills Sunday, which is a rather rare sighting. Obviously, one of the reasons he rarely loses his cool is because he wins so often, but this has arguably been the worst season the Chiefs have had during the Mahomes era and it seems like the players are feeling it.

After being ripped by the media and having some time to reflect on the situation, Mahomes regrets his actions that occurred on the field Sunday.

“Obviously you don’t want to react that way,” Mahomes said Monday in an interview with 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City. “I mean, I care, man. I love it — I love this game, and I love my teammates. I want to go out there and put everything on the line to win, but obviously you can’t do that, can’t be that way toward officials or really anybody in life.

He also touched on his interaction with Bills quarterback Josh Allen during the postgame handshakes.

“More than anything, I regretted the way I acted toward Josh [Allen] after the game, because he had nothing to do with it,” he said.

I think it’s a good thing that Mahomes stepped up and realized that his actions were wrong. He plays with a lot of passion and leads a team that competes for a Super Bowl every year.

The TV cameras and microphones picked up a lot of what he said during his interaction with Josh Allen: “Wildest f—ing call I’ve ever seen. Offensive offsides on that play, man. F—ing terrible.”

After Mahomes was able to watch the film Monday, he admitted that the call on the field was correct.

“Obviously I’ve seen it now, and if he didn’t check and they weren’t good, it is a foul,” he said. “It is something you rarely see called in the NFL. But it was a foul; it’s part of playing the game, man. You learn from it, it’s part of being a person, you learn from your mistakes and try to be better next time.”

There’s a chance that Mahomes will receive a fine for his actions, stating he is O.K. with whatever punishment may come his way.

“You have to accept the consequences of your actions,” he said. “That’s something that I’ve always stood by. I obviously didn’t act in the way that I usually act, and if there’s consequences that come from that, I obviously accept those.”

The Chiefs need to take the rest of the season very seriously, as they only hold a one-game lead in the AFC West. Mahomes and the rest of the team can’t make these types of mistakes in the clutch and Mahomes needs to keep his cool as the leader and face of the team. His actions and how he responds to adversity can affect the morale of the team, and I’m sure he is aware of that.
