The human body isn’t meant to bend the way the ankle of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes did during their AFC Divisional Round matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mahomes would miss a little time but eventually came back to finish the game. As a result of the injury, there have been concerns that Mahomes might not be ready to play in the AFC Championship game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Mahomes addressed reporters after Wednesday’s practice and provided a positive update.
“It’s doing good. A few days of treatment, a few days of rehab,” Mahomes said, via ProFootballTalk. “Excited to be on the practice field and kind of test it out and see where I’m at. But, it’s feeling good so far.
“I was able to do some extra testing, just to make sure everything was good the night after the game. And then get a few things done to help the treatment kind of start off,” Mahomes said. “And then the next few days has kind of been an all-day thing where you’re either doing treatment, or rehab, or watching film.
“But it’s a full-day thing where you’re trying to make sure you’re obviously prepared for the Bengals and the great football team — mentally and physically.”
Mahomes suffered a similar high ankle sprain before during his time in the NFL. During Week 1 of the 2019 season, he suffered a high ankle sprain, but to his left ankle. He would not miss any time, going on to play in Week 2 against the Raiders and throwing for four touchdowns.
“Especially when you have different ankles at the quarterback position, you’re planting and throwing off different stuff,” Mahomes said, via ProFootballTalk. “So, the last one, it was the leg that I landed on, so I had to find other ways to throw where I could land and keep it in the right spot. This time, I’ll have to find ways to be able to push off and still be able to make throws the right ways. So, definitely similar in a sense but different limitations and stuff that I’ll have to work through.”
I think it is safe to say that Patrick Mahomes is going to do whatever it takes to play this weekend against the Bengals. This a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship matchup in which Cincinnati came out on top 27-24 to clinch a berth in the Super Bowl. It’s going to take something going terribly wrong in order to force Mahomes off the field come Sunday.
